Make a clear request
Introduce yourself, explain your interest in dentistry, and ask whether the office accepts student observers. Ask about scheduling, training and any paperwork before you arrive.
Notice more than procedures
Pay attention to communication, teamwork, decision making and the pace of the day. Ask questions at an appropriate moment and follow the office’s privacy and safety instructions.
Record the experience soon afterward
Keep the date, setting, supervisor, hours and your own role. Write a short reflection about something you learned or want to understand better. Never include patient names, identifying details, photographs or clinical records.
Look for perspective, not just hours
Consider experiences in different settings when feasible. Check each school’s specific exposure rules. Do not assume volunteering, paid dental work, virtual observation and shadowing are interchangeable for every school.
